What is a Vedic Birth Chart?
A Vedic birth chart, or janam kundli, is the foundational map of your life according to classical Hindu astrology. Unlike Western tropical astrology, the Vedic system uses the sidereal zodiac—the actual positions of constellations as they appear in the sky—to place your planets, houses, and lunar node (Rahu and Ketu) at the moment of your birth.
The chart's most vital element is your Lagna, or ascendant—the zodiacal sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth time. The Lagna determines your first house and sets the tone for all twelve houses that follow, each governing different life domains: wealth, siblings, marriage, career, health, and spiritual practice.
Your janam kundli records the position of all nine classical planets (Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu, Ketu) across the twelve signs and houses. It also identifies your birth nakshatra—the lunar mansion where the Moon resides—which carries profound psychological and karmic significance. Together, these elements form a blueprint that Vedic astrologers use to understand your temperament, life purpose, and timing of major events.
