What is Mangal Dosha?
Mangal dosha, also known as Kuja dosha or Manglik status, refers to a condition in Vedic astrology where Mars (Mangal) occupies certain positions in the natal chart. According to classical texts, when Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the Lagna (Ascendant), Moon, or Venus, it is said to create an affliction that historically has been considered significant in marriage matching.
The concern stems from Mars's nature as a fiery, assertive planet. When positioned in these sensitive houses—particularly those governing marriage (7th house) and domestic harmony (4th house)—traditional astrologers believed the native's marital life could face challenges. A person identified as Manglik has traditionally been matched with another Manglik, as the theory holds that two such individuals neutralize each other's Mars affliction through mutual understanding and similar temperamental traits.
However, Mangal dosha is not a curse. Many cancellations exist within the system. Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted sign (Capricorn) significantly weakens or nullifies the dosha. Similarly, if Mars is aspected by benefic planets or placed in certain yogas, its malefic force diminishes. Modern practitioners increasingly view Manglik status as one factor among many, rather than a determinant of marital fate.
